My approach to counseling:

  • Type of Therapy - CBT/EMDR

I offer a personalized approach tailored to each of my clients individual needs to help attain the personal growth they’re striving for. My theory used in session is primarily CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). CBT theory suggests that our thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and behavior are all connected, and that what we think and feel affects the way we behave. CBT is an evidenced based approach that aims at replacing distorted thought patterns with more helpful beliefs that can strongly influence your overall experience in life. EMDR is a technique that changes the way a certain memory or trauma is stored in the brain. This modality uses Bilateral Stimulation to reprocess memories with the goal of diminishing symptoms. Reprocessing allows us to come to a new understanding of the event as well as the beliefs you have about yourself in relationship to the trauma. Therapy is not one size fits all, so I may use different approaches depending on the goals and needs of my client.

  • Therapeutic Alliance

Success in therapy depends on the therapeutic alliance and the commitment from both parties. I am open minded to goals and the direction of therapy and will often check in to make sure that the client is gaining the skills and self awareness they were hoping for. In session, we will explore thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I will also provide tools and strategies to practice between sessions. I ask that my clients are open to self exploration and make a commitment to attend sessions and practice the skills/tools discussed in session. There are no grades in therapy; however how much you get out of counseling depends on how much you put in.

  • Common Questions

How can therapy help me? Therapy can help you gain a better understanding of yourself - your beliefs, goals and values. It can help with learning new skills to cope with strong emotions or improve relationships. It can also help you develop new behavior patterns and solve problems you never thought possible.

Do I need medication? Evidence shows that long term solutions to mental health and emotional problems cannot be solely treated by medication. Instead of just treating the symptoms, therapy can address and resolve root causes of emotional and behavioral distress. Medication is necessary for some clients and not for others. This topic can be discussed further in session if the client chooses.
